Bank revetment is a construction along the bank of a ditch, pond, canal or waterway that prevents the bank from eroding. The revetment keeps the soil in place and provides a stable, neat bank finish. It is installed with vertical planks driven or pressed into the ground, supported by horizontal beams and posts. Shoring is used in private gardens as well as in municipal waterways and agricultural ditches. You can read more about the materials on our website products page.

The choice depends on your specific situation. Hardwood (azobé) revetment is ideal for heavy loads, quay walls and projects where a natural appearance is desired. Prolock plastic sheeting is perfect for residential projects, garden ponds and ditch banks where maintenance-free use and maximum lifespan are priorities. On our page hardwood vs plastic you will find an extensive comparison. We are also happy to advise you personally - call us 0522 - 85 15 51.

The costs vary depending on the material, the height of the revetment and the soil conditions. Hardwood sheet piling starts from approximately €45 per linear meter (material only). Prolock plastic sheeting starts from approximately €55 per linear meter. Including installation by a contractor, you can count on €80 to €200 per linear meter, depending on the complexity and accessibility. Request a quote for an exact quote for your situation. You can also find more information at sheeting costs.

In many cases, a permit is required from the water board based on the Water Board approval. An exemption often applies when replacing existing sheet piling at the same location and with the same dimensions. A water permit is usually required for new revetments or changes to the profile. Always contact your water board or municipality in advance. On our page permits you will find all details about the permit process.

Yes, with the right knowledge and tools it is possible to install sheet piling yourself. Lighter plastic sheeting (Prolock Light) is most suitable for self-construction. The shelves are lightweight and simply slide together. Hardwood sheet piling usually requires a piledriver or vibratory hammer, which requires more experience. We always recommend hiring an experienced contractor for larger projects or greater heights. Read more at install revetment.

Hardwood (azobé) revetment lasts an average of 25 to 50 years, depending on the circumstances. In fresh water with a stable water level, a lifespan of 40 to 50 years is realistic. In brackish or salt water, or with strongly fluctuating water levels, 25 to 35 years is more common. Prolock plastic sheeting even lasts 50 years or longer. Read more about lifespan and maintenance.

The Prolock Sigma is the heavier variant, suitable for higher ground pressure and greater revetment heights. The Sigma has a more robust profile and higher bending strength, making it suitable for waterways up to approximately 1.50 meters. The Prolock Light is designed for lighter applications such as garden ponds, narrow ditches and decorative banks. The Light is lighter, easier to install and cheaper to purchase. Both variants are available in brown and anthracite and offer the same lifespan of 50+ years.

Plastic sheeting (Prolock) is completely maintenance-free. Hardwood sheeting requires minimal maintenance — the natural weathering to silver-gray does not affect the structure. An annual visual inspection is sufficient to identify any problems at an early stage. You can easily remove any algae growth with water and a soft brush. If you want to maintain the original color of hardwood, you can apply a UV-protective oil annually. Read more at lifespan & maintenance.

For hardwood sheet piling, azobé posts ranging from 6×6 cm to 10×10 cm are generally used, depending on the height and load. With Prolock plastic sheeting you can choose steel U-profiles or hardwood posts. The correct post size depends on the height of the sheet piling, the soil type and the ground pressure. As a rule of thumb, the higher the revetment, the heavier the post. We are happy to advise you on the right combination — check us out assortment of please contact us.

As a rule of thumb, the pile depth must be at least equal to the visible height above the water bottom. With a sheeting of 80 cm above the ground, it must be at least 80 cm in the ground (ratio 1:1). With heavy earth pressure, looser soil or higher bank protections, a greater driving depth is necessary (ratio 1:1.5). The posts should always be driven deeper than the planks for extra stability. More information about placement can be found at install revetment.

FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council, an international organization that certifies responsible forest management.
