What is hardwood sheet piling?

Hardwood sheet piling is a proven method for bank protection and earth retaining. The planks are placed vertically in the ground and together form a sturdy wall that prevents soil from sinking into ditches, ponds or canals.

Our sheet pile planks are made from azobé en bilinga — tropical woods with exceptional durability. Bee Houthandel Jan Sok we only supply FSC certified hardwood from responsibly managed forests.

25 to 50 years of durability

Azobe sheet pile planks last when used correctly 25 to 50 years even in permanently wet conditions. The wood is naturally resistant to mold, insects and rot — without chemical treatment.

Maintenance is minimal: no painting, staining or impregnating. Over time, the wood will develop a beautiful gray patina without affecting its structural strength. Optionally, you can apply a UV protective oil to maintain the original color.

When should you choose hardwood sheet piling?

Hardwood is the best choice if you value a natural appearance in combination with maximum strength.

High banks

At ground pressures of more than 80 cm, the stiffness of 50mm azobé is unrivaled for deeper waterways.

Visible locations

In gardens, parks and homes where the natural appearance of wood contributes to the overall appearance.

Heavy soil

Clay and peat soils that exert a lot of pressure require the superior flexural strength of hardwood.

Professional

For contractors and water boards who must meet strict specifications and long-term guarantees.

Installation tips for hardwood sheet piling

With the right preparation, installing hardwood sheet pile planks is also feasible for an experienced do-it-yourselfer. The five basic steps:

  1. Check permits

Depending on the municipality and water board, an environmental or water permit may be required. See permits for sheet piling.

  2. Install hardwood posts

A hardwood post every 100–150 cm as a support point, driven deep enough for sufficient support.

  3. Hit planks

Use a vibratory hammer or wooden impact head to drive planks into the ground without damaging the tongue-and-groove profile.

  4. Work from low to high

Start at the deepest point and work upwards to prevent shifting due to ground pressure.

  5. Finish with deck plank

A hardwood deck plank on the top gives a sleek finish and protects the end ends against moisture.
